Stock market holiday on May 1: Are NSE and BSE open or closed for Maharashtra Day?

Stock Market holiday on May 1: The Indian stock exchanges, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE, will be shut on Friday, May 1, on the occasion of Maharashtra Day.

Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Divas, is celebrated every year on May 1, commemorating the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960.

There will be no trading in equity, derivatives, or securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments, and normal trading will resume on Monday, May 3.

The market, which is usually open for trading from Monday to Friday between 9.15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., will be closed on Friday, marking a long weekend. This is the eighth stock market holiday of the 2025-26 calendar year (CY26).

Trading holidays in May

The Maharashtra Day holiday is the first trading holiday of May. The bourses will also remain closed on Thursday, May 28, on account of Bakri Id.

In the month of June, the stock exchanges will remain closed on one day (excluding weekends). The markets will observe a holiday on Friday, June 26, for Muharram.

Following that, the bourses will be shut on Monday, September 14, on account of Ganesh Chaturti.

Will MCX be open or closed on May 1?

Furthermore, the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) will observe partial closure on Friday, May 1.

While the domestic commodity exchange will be closed for its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm, it will reopen for its evening session from 5 pm to 11:30/11:55 pm.

The MCX will also observe a partial holiday on Thursday, May 28.

Bank holidays on March 26

Banks across all the major Indian cities, except Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Gangtok, Jaipur, Kohima, and Shillong, will observe a holiday on May 1 for Maharashtra Day/Buddha Pournima/May Day (Labour Day)/Birth Anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu (depending on the region).

Banks in Kolkata will observe a holiday on Saturday, May 2, for the birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, also known as the Bard of Bengal and the composer of India’s national anthem.
