Where is India spending ₹37 lakh crore? Roads, railways top govt infra list

India is monitoring 1,775 ongoing infrastructure projects with a combined revised cost of ₹37.11 lakh crore, according to the latest government data.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Tuesday shared in its flash report that roads and railways account for a major share of the government's infrastructure pipeline.

The projects, costing ₹37.11 lakh crore, are spread across 17 central ministries and departments and have incurred cumulative expenditure of ₹19.26 lakh crore, or about 51.91% of the revised project cost, as of July 2026.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways accounts for the largest number of projects at 993, with a revised cost of ₹9.62 lakh crore.

The Railways follows with 190 projects worth ₹6.38 lakh crore.

The Ministry of Power is implementing 98 projects with a combined revised cost of ₹6.08 lakh crore, while the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has 103 projects worth ₹4.23 lakh crore.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has 50 projects with a revised cost of ₹3.78 lakh crore, while the Ministry of Coal is implementing 121 projects worth ₹2.22 lakh crore.

The data is part of MoSPI's July 2026 Flash Report on central sector infrastructure projects costing ₹150 crore and above, monitored through its PAIMANA-PROJ platform.

Transport and Logistics dominates the infrastructure pipeline, accounting for 1,246 projects, or around 70% of the total, with a revised cost of ₹19.81 lakh crore.

The sector includes roads and highways, railways, aviation, urban public transport, shipping and inland waterways.

Energy is the second-largest sector, with 205 projects carrying a combined revised cost of ₹10.66 lakh crore.

It includes oil and gas infrastructure, electricity generation, transmission and distribution networks and energy storage systems.

Water and sanitation projects account for ₹2.05 lakh crore across 53 projects, while communication infrastructure comprises 31 projects worth ₹1.34 lakh crore.

Social and commercial infrastructure has 91 projects with a revised cost of ₹0.99 lakh crore.

The report also shows that 675 projects, or around 38% of the total, have achieved more than 80% physical progress. Another 305 projects have crossed 80% financial completion.

The project pipeline includes 735 mega projects costing ₹1,000 crore and above, with an original cost of ₹28.77 lakh crore. The remaining 1,040 major projects, costing below ₹1,000 crore and up to ₹150 crore, have an aggregate cost of ₹4.93 lakh crore.

During July, 36 additional projects were brought under PAIMANA monitoring, including the ₹38,358-crore Meja Thermal Power Project, Stage-II, and the ₹13,037.66-crore Jaipur Metro Rail Project Phase 2.

The ₹2,810-crore Srikakulam-Angul Gas Pipeline Project, the ₹2,069.6-crore Aligarh-Kanpur Package I highway project and the ₹2,298.37-crore Dwarka Expressway Package III were also commissioned during the month.
