Trump to host Anthropic CEO Amodei for first one-on-one White House meeting; what's the significance?

US President Donald Trump plans to host Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at a private dinner at the White House on Sunday, in a sign of improving ties between the administration and the artificial intelligence company after months of tensions, reported Axios, citing people familiar with the matter.

The dinner would be the first one-on-one meeting between Trump and Amodei and comes two days before Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are due to meet leading AI executives at the White House.

Trump confirmed the planned dinner on Sunday and reiterated his opposition to slowing the pace of AI development, saying the United States needs to maintain its technological lead over China.

"We're about maybe a year and a half up on China," Trump told Fox News while attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois.

"We're leading, and we're building tremendous, trillions of dollars' worth of places. And why should we give that up?"

Amodei has raised concerns that moving too quickly in developing increasingly powerful AI systems could increase risks.

In an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier", he argued that the industry should slow the pace at which it improves the capabilities of AI models.

The planned dinner comes amid a complicated relationship between Anthropic and the Trump administration.

A federal appeals court last week upheld the Pentagon's decision to classify Anthropic as a "supply chain risk", preventing the US military from using its AI models.

Amodei had said that Anthropic remains committed to supporting US national security but would not agree to demands that the company permit "any lawful use" of its technology without restrictions.

"I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies," Amodei wrote in February, adding that the company could not "in good conscience" agree to unrestricted use of its technology.

Trump has also publicly criticised Amodei over his calls for greater caution in AI development, at one point accusing the Anthropic chief of trying to be a "perfect little angel".

Amodei has warned that advances in AI could produce major economic and medical benefits but also create increasingly difficult risks.

One concern he has identified is "recursive self-improvement", in which AI systems become increasingly capable of helping develop the next generation of AI systems.

He has argued that such a process could eventually move faster than efforts to understand and control the technology.

Trump, however, has dismissed concerns that AI could spiral out of control, saying the technology's only necessary "guardrails" were a "STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT."

The dinner also follows Amodei's absence from a state dinner last week for Chinese President Xi Jinping, where several leading technology executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, were present.
