Meta rolls out WhatsApp web calling, new features for browser users

Meta has introduced web-based calling on WhatsApp, allowing users to make and receive audio and video calls directly through a browser without downloading the desktop application.

The update, announced on Tuesday, enables both one-on-one and group calls on WhatsApp Web.

Users will also have access to features such as screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab with call history and favourites, and end-to-end encryption for web calls.

Meta said the browser-based calling feature is aimed at users who rely on shared computers, work devices where app downloads are restricted, or those who simply prefer using a web browser.

WhatsApp has also introduced call transfer, allowing users to move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting.

A call started on a smartphone can be transferred to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app on reaching home or office, and vice versa.

The platform has also added a waiting room feature for group calls.

When a call link is created with the "Require approval to join" option enabled, participants will remain in a waiting room until admitted by the host.

Meta said it has also launched "QuickHD", which enables high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call, and a noise suppression feature that filters background sounds to improve voice clarity.

Users can manage noise suppression through in-call settings.

The company said the features are being rolled out gradually and will be available to all users over the coming weeks.

The announcement comes nearly a month after CRED founder Kunal Shah joined Meta to lead WhatsApp's next phase of growth.

Sharing the new feature on social media platform X, Shah posted a screenshot of a WhatsApp video call with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made through a web browser and wrote, "WhatsApp calls now work in your browser. Your 47 open Chrome tabs finally got company that's actually useful."
