The contract was signed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The BrahMos system fitted onboard various frontline warships is the Indian Navy's primary surface-to-surface missile system for maritime strike operations.

The weapon system can engage land and sea targets at extended ranges with pinpoint accuracy and at supersonic speeds, the ministry said.

The project has a minimum indigenous content of 68% and is expected to encourage participation of various Indian industries, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

It will also generate employment over a period of three years, according to the ministry.

The procurement is expected to bolster India’s maritime security architecture and defence capabilities and “marks a critical milestone in the ongoing efforts to indigenise advanced military technology.”

The contract is part of the government's push to enhance domestic defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports.
