Apple is manufacturing iPhones worth $14 billion in India, doubled as compared to the past year, news agency Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, April 7. The jump in production in India comes at a time when the California-headquartered tech giant is looking to diversify beyond China.

The iPhones manufactured in India accounted for around 14%, the report said, citing persons privy to the development. This means that one out of every seven iPhones is made in India.

Foxconn Technology Group made nearly 67% of the India-made iPhones, while Pegatron Corp assembled 17%, the report said. Tata-owned Wistron Corp plant made the remaining.

Tata likely to buy Pegatron's iPhone plant

According to Reuters, Pegatron is in advanced talks to sell its sole iPhone manufacturing facility near Chennai in Tamil Nadu to the Tata Group.

As per the proposed deal, Tata plans to have a majority stake of 65% in a joint venture to operate the Pegatron plant. The report said that the Taiwanese company would provide the technical support.

The Pegatron India factory employs 10,000 people and produces five million iPhones annually.

In February, Apple announced that its India business marked the highest revenue in the quarter ending in December 2023. This was due to record iPhone sales and better adoption of its offerings by enterprises.

"Emerging markets have been a very key area of strength for us. If you look at it, India grew in revenue terms, reporting strong double digits in the December quarter, and hit a quarter revenue record," Apple CEO Tim Cook had said as the company reported $6 billion revenue from India business.

Globally, Apple's revenue increased to $119.6 billion in the December quarter compared to $117.91 billion in the same period last year. iPhone sales contributed ₹69.7 billion, Mac ₹7.78 billion, iPad ₹7 billion and services contributed ₹23.12 billion in revenue.
