Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed AirTrunk's proposed investment, saying India’s digital infrastructure journey is gathering “remarkable momentum.”

In a post on X, Modi said AirTrunk has announced plans to develop 5 gigawatts (GW) of data centre capacity in India, describing it as among the largest proposed investments in the country's digital infrastructure ecosystem.

Modi said such investments would strengthen India's position as a global hub for cloud computing and AI, while generating employment opportunities, supporting local supply chains and accelerating innovation-led growth.

"It is clear that the future of the world's digital economy is increasingly being shaped in India!" he added.

The prime minister also shared photographs from his meeting with AirTrunk Founder and Chief Executive Officer Robin Khuda.

AirTrunk, a hyperscale data centre specialist serving cloud, content and large enterprise customers across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region, said the investment programme would position India as a cornerstone of its global growth strategy and one of its most significant long-term investment markets.

AirTrunk said the proposed investment, backed by Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), would rank among the largest digital infrastructure initiatives currently under consideration in India.

Khuda said Prime Minister Modi's vision for India's digital economy has helped create one of the world's most attractive destinations for technology investment.

"India has the scale, talent, and ambition required to become a global AI powerhouse. AirTrunk is excited to support that vision," he said in a company statement.

According to the company, its proposed development pipeline across multiple states and union territories would support India's ambition to become a global destination for AI and cloud infrastructure investment while generating significant economic activity, jobs and technology ecosystem growth.

The announcement comes shortly after AirTrunk's entry into the Indian market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra in April this year. Following the acquisition, the company has a development pipeline of 600 MW across Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Founded in 2015, AirTrunk develops and operates hyperscale data centre campuses and currently runs a network of facilities across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region.
