FAQs on NSE Holidays 2025
How do NSE holidays affect stock trading?
NSE holidays impact trading by halting all market activity, which means no orders can be placed or executed on those days. Traders must adjust their strategies to accommodate these closures, often leading to a backlog of orders that are placed when the market reopens. This can result in increased volatility or price fluctuations as pent-up demand and supply are processed.
Can I trade on NSE holidays in India?
NSE trading holidays fall on all national holidays and festive days like Diwali and Christmas. On these market holidays all trading activities in the equity, equity derivatives and commodities segments remain halted.
Are NSE holidays different from those of other exchanges in India?
Yes, holidays can differ between exchanges in India. While there are several common holidays observed by major exchanges like NSE, BSE and MCX, each exchange may have its own set of additional holidays. For example, in 2025, MCX will be closed on Republic Day (January 26), Good Friday (April 18), Independence Day (August 15), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Diwali-Laxmi Pujan (October 21) and Christmas (December 25). NSE and BSE also observe these holidays, but they may be closed throughout the day for certain holidays for which MCX may have a morning or an evening session open. Furthermore, NSE and BSE may have different schedule of holidays altogether based on their circular.
So, while many holidays overlap, there are some dates when specific exchanges are closed, affecting trading schedules and order placements.
How can I track NSE holidays for the year 2025?
You can track NSE holidays throughout 2025 by regularly checking the official NSE website, where they publish the list of market holidays for the year. You can check the entire schedule

How many holidays are allotted to NSE in the year 2025?
Excluding the regular Saturdays and Sundays, NSE is likely to have around 14 holidays in 2025. The holidays are decided on the basis of national observances and regional festivals. The initial list is published by NSE at the beginning of each calendar year. The stock exchange remains closed on most national days and nation-wide public holidays like Republic Day (26th Jan), Holi, Good Friday, Diwali and Christmas.
What is the NSE’s settlement holiday?
Although the NSE is live for trading, a settlement holiday means no share/fund transfer due to bank holidays. On settlement holidays, trading may not be affected but trade settlement and delivery remain suspended.
What is NSE’s clearing holiday?
The NSE and the clearing corporation do not process trade settlements on clearing holidays as banks are closed. The stock market remains open, but settlements are postponed. If a clearing holiday happens to fall on a settlement day, your shares or money may take an extra day to reflect in your account.
The NSE usually comes up with a separate list of clearing holidays every year.
What do we do if a holiday falls on the same day as the weekly equity options expiry?
For such cases, the weekly expiry day (Thursday) for NSE equity options is adjusted to the preceding trading day (Wednesday). This means that all open positions will now be liquidated a day earlier. This adjustment eliminates ambiguity and eases the expiry process. Traders should be ready to devise new strategies, particularly for urgent trades because the shift in expiry dates affects the liquidity, volatility and pricing of options contracts. NSE issues preparatory statements for traders to be informed regarding these issues.
Which NSE holidays do your weekends consume in 2025?
A number of market holidays in 2025 will be falling on the weekends. So there won’t be additional days off for these holidays as the NSE does not operate on Saturdays and Sundays. Holidays like Republic Day (January 26), Ram Navami (April 6), Eid-ul-Adha (June 7), and Muharram (July 6) will fall either on Saturdays or Sundays in 2025.
