A new Visual Capitalist report ranks countries with the highest number of billion dollar companies. India has secured a spot in the global top 3.
The report maps companies with over $1 billion in market cap. Since 2000, India's count of such companies has surged significantly.
In 2000, India had only 20 companies with a market cap of over $1 bn. By 2024, that number has jumped to 348, a 17x growth in two decades.
Let’s look at the top 6 countries with the highest number of billion-dollar firms by market capitalisation.
The US ranks first, with 1,873 companies having a market cap over $1 billion, making up over one-third of such companies worldwide.
Japan ranks second with 404 companies worth over $1 billion. Its market strength makes it Asia’s top country on this list.
India ranks third globally with 348 companies above the $1 billion mark, ahead of several other major economies.
Canada stands at 4th position, with 228 companies worth more than $1 billion, showing strong North American presence.
The UK takes the fifth spot, home to 218 billion-dollar companies across sectors like finance, healthcare and energy.
Surprisingly, China ranks sixth with 212 companies valued at over $1 billion, just below the UK in the global list.
