What is Pink Tax? Know its origin and significance

A US study found that the products marketed to women are often costlier than similar products marketed to men. This difference is referred to as ‘pink tax’.

This pink tax isn’t exactly a tax but a higher price paid by women compared to similar products for men.

From shampoos to razors, women’s products often cost more despite being almost identical to men’s products.

The reason? Marketing strategies and packaging. Brands often label products as "female-specific" to justify higher prices, creating a gender-based disparity.

According to a survey, nearly 67% of Indian citizens were unaware of the history of the pink tax.

It came under the spotlight when people protested against the 12% GST on sanitary products, which was scrapped in 2018.

Many people are still unaware of this so-called tax; however, some social media campaigns, such as #GenderPricing and #AxThePinkTax, are spreading awareness.

Though the pink tax is not an actual tax, being aware of these pricing disparities can help women make informed purchasing decisions.
