As 2024 transitions from August to September, it marks the beginning of the festive season in India. From Janmashtami to Eid-e-Milad, Diwali and Christmas, here is the list of upcoming festivals.
Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami, the annual Hindu festival, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 26.
Ganesh Chaturthi
Beginning on September 7, Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day festival honouring the birth of Lord Ganesha with ornate displays and rituals, ending with ‘visarjan’, the immersion of clay idols in water.
Onam
Onam, the main festival of Kerala, celebrates harvest and King Mahabali’s homecoming. It will run from September 5 to 17, with main festivities to be held on September 15. The celebration includes floral decorations, a grand feast and boat races.
Eid-e-Milad
Eid-e-Milad celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, falling on September 16. It is observed with prayers, processions, and feasts. It is marked by sharing meals and charitable acts.
Dussehra
Dussehra, which will be celebrated on October 11, concludes the 9-day Navratri festival. It celebrates Lord Rama's victory over Ravana and Goddess Durga’s triumph over Mahishasura.
Diwali
The festival of lights is a 5-day festival that honours the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya. It is celebrated with fireworks, diyas and lanterns. It will be observed on November 1, 2024.
Christmas
Celebrated on December 25 each year, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated with special prayers, carols, sweets, and gift giving. It is also the final festival of the Gregorian calendar year.
