Yakten, in Sikkim’s Pakyong district, is now officially India’s first Digital Nomad Village, launched under the Nomad Sikkim initiative.

Declared as a Digital Nomad Village on July 14, the initiative is aimed at making the village into a year-round remote work hub in the Eastern Himalayas.

The village is equipped with dual-line high-speed WiFi and backup internet, with power systems, to plan for the disruptions seen in hilly areas.

Eight eco-friendly homestays have been renovated in the village to include dedicated workspaces, reliable connectivity and even home-cooked meals.

It aims to boost rural income in Sikkim and transform seasonal tourism into stable revenue generation. The homestays’ earnings are expected to rise five-fold.

Keeping connectivity in mind, it is just 10 km from Pakyong Airport and 35 km from Gangtok, with improved roads and several transportation options.

The pilot launch will be monitored for three years, and if successful, the initiative will be expanded to other parts of Sikkim and across India for sustainable WFH.
