According to data published by the World Resources Institute (WRI), 25 countries are currently experiencing extremely high water stress, using over 80% of their water for agricultural, industrial and domestic purposes.
Let’s see the 6 most water-stressed countries in the world according to the data published by WRI in August 2023.
Bahrain is facing extreme water stress, using over 80% of its renewable water supply annually. It uses desalination for most of its drinking water and rising demand is worsening the scarcity.
Cyprus relies on reservoirs and desalination of water for its consumption due to severe droughts. The country’s annual rainfall has declined significantly in recent years, intensifying its challenges.
Kuwait depends on desalination for 90% of its water. The country is in extreme water stress and has one of the highest per capita water consumption rates in the world.
Lebanon suffers from mismanagement and pollution, which has led to water scarcity despite decent rainfall. The country uses over 78% of its available supply.
Oman also relies heavily on groundwater and desalination for its water needs, consuming over 80% of the supply. Urban expansion and traditional agricultural practices put more pressure on the country’s water resources.
Qatar uses over 80% of its renewable supply and relies on desalination for 99% of its water needs. Its high domestic water consumption adds to the scarcity.
