India celebrates September 5 as Teachers' Day. Schools all around the country organise events to pay tribute to their teachers.
Teacher’s Day is as much about honouring our teachers as it is about remembering Dr S Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888.
Dr S Radhakrishnan was an Indian politician and philosopher who was also the second president of the country (1962-67).
He was one of the most distinguished scholars of philosophy and comparative religion in the 20th century.
As an acclaimed teacher, he has taught at renowned schools like the University of Calcutta and Oxford University.
He was also the vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (1939-48).
He received many awards in his life including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954.
