T. Rex bones to pizza: Strangest things sent to space

From LEGO sets to dinosaur bones, here are some of the weirdest things humans have sent to space!

LEGO sets

In May 2011, NASA sent a range of LEGO sets to the International Space Station (ISS) to see how the toy would behave in microgravity. 

Dinosaur bones

Since 1985, scientists have sent various parts of dinosaurs, including their skulls, vertebrae, etc, to space. In 2014, NASA launched a piece of the T. Rex fossil on the Orion spacecraft.

Baby jellyfish

In 1991, NASA launched 2,500 jellyfish into space to study the effect of microgravity on their development. On their return, they had trouble orienting themselves to Earth’s gravity.

Pizza

In 2001, Pizza Hut delivered a six-inch salami pizza to cosmonaut Yuri Usachov at the ISS. The company reportedly paid $1 million to the Russian Space Agency for this promotion.

Buzz Lightyear toy

A Buzz Lightyear (character from Toy Story) action figure was sent to the ISS in 2008, where it spent 15 months before returning to Earth.

Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber

The original lightsaber used by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars was sent into space in 2007. It was a publicity stunt to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Star Wars movie.
