Sunita Williams prepares for extended stay on the ISS

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore will return to the Earth in February 2025.

Here’s how they will manage essentials like food, oxygen, and their health during their extended stay.

Williams and Wilmore will eat a mix of pre-packaged meals and fresh veggies created, ensuring they stay healthy and well-nourished.

The International Space Station (ISS) has oxygen-generating systems that convert approximately 50% of carbon dioxide back into oxygen.

A recycling system on the ISS converts waste fluids and moisture into drinkable water.

Similarly, solid waste will be recycled and turned into useful resources, which is crucial for the long mission.

The crew is trained and has medical supplies to handle any health emergencies during the mission.

The crew faces risks like radiation and muscle loss, but regular exercise and protective measures are in place to keep them safe.

NASA has announced the final crew for the SpaceX Crew-9 mission, which will bring Williams and Willmore back to Earth. It is set to depart for the ISS in September 2024.
