John Hopfield was awarded for creating “an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data.”
Named after the Nobel laureate, the Hopfield network can store patterns and has a method for recreating them.
Geoffrey Hinton was awarded for inventing the Boltzmann machine, a new network that uses the Hopfield network as a foundation. It can learn to recognise characteristic elements in a given type of data.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Science said that the two scientists were being honoured “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”
