In 2023, the Government of India declared August 23 as the National Space Day of India, recognising the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3’s lander and rover on August 23, 2023.
With the success of Chandrayaan-3, India became the fourth country to land on the Moon and the first-ever country to land near the Moon’s southern polar region.

Following the achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi named August 23 to be the National Space Day, and the first one will be celebrated across the country this year in 2024.

This year’s theme for the celebration of the day is "Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga," highlighting the importance of space exploration for society and technological advancements.

There will be a two-day grand event at Bharat Mandapam to celebrate this year’s National Space Day, having a range of sessions, interactive exhibitions and important announcements highlighting India’s achievements in the space domain.

A ‘Space on Wheels’ project will also be implemented in which buses will do a mobile exhibition in universities and colleges during the Space Day celebrations.

It will be aimed at disseminating information about the Indian Space Research Organisation’s activities and India’s space achievements to students all across the country.

Many other activities are planned by ISRO for the celebration including The Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon 2024 and ISRO Robotics Challenge.
