On Wednesday, October 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport, a milestone in India’s journey in modern aviation.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is unlike any other airport in India. Here are some interesting facts that make it truly unique.
The terminal features a roof shaped like unfolding lotus petals and sculptural columns that channel natural light, inspired by India’s national flower.
NMIA will be India’s first fully paperless and contactless facility, with AI-powered biometric boarding and automated passenger flow systems.
Together with Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, it will form India’s first dual‑hub system to reduce traffic congestion.
The airport will link directly with Navi Mumbai Metro, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and coastal highways for seamless passenger access.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport, built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, is a public-private partnership between Adani Group and CIDCO.
Parallel runways and optimized taxi routes will shorten aircraft movement, cutting fuel use and minimising delays.
Built in phases over 1,160 hectares, the airport will expand from handling 20 million passengers a year to over 90 million.
