On August 16, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle-D3 (SSLV-D3) carrying the earth observation satellite EOS-08 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

This mission is the third and final developmental flight of SSLV, ISRO’s smallest rocket standing at 34 metres tall. It can carry payloads up to 500 kg into a low-earth orbit.

SSLV was built with the aim to launch satellites at a low cost and quick turnaround time. It took more than 7 years to build the rocket.

ISRO aims to commercialise the rocket. ISRO Chairperson Dr S Somanath believes that SSLV will be a game-changer for commercial space launches in India.

With the successful launch of the EOS-08 satellite, ISRO has completed the SSLV development project.
