The Constitution replaced the Government of India Act, 1935, turning India from a dominion into a republic after gaining independence from British rule in 1947.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee and was called the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’. He added the word ‘fraternity’ to the Preamble.
The Constituent Assembly took 2 years, 11 months and 17 days to draft the Constitution of India.

The Indian Constitution is the longest in the world. It originally had 395 articles divided into 22 parts, and 8 schedules and comprised about 1.5 lakh words.
Calligrapher Prem Behari Narain Raizada wrote the Constitution by hand. He started the process on November 28, 1949 and completed it in April 1950.
Artist Nandalal Bose decorated the original Constitution's calligraphic sheets with 22 miniature illustrations, depicting key moments in Indian history from the Indus Valley to the freedom movement.
