Some studies believe humans have many more senses than the five basic senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch). Let’s have a look at some senses beyond the basic five!
Proprioception
Also known as the “sixth sense”, it allows people to keep track of where their body parts are in space, even without looking. It is how we can walk without looking at our feet.
Interoception
It refers to the sense that allows people to perceive and understand internal bodily sensations such as fatigue, thirst, hunger, sleep and more.
Thermoception
It is the ability to sense temperature, specifically hot and cold, on the skin. It not only detects external temperature but also helps maintain normal human temperature (37°C).
Equilibrioception
It is the perception of balance and spatial orientation that allows people to stand upright without falling and maintain posture.
Chronoception
Also known as time perception, it is the subjective experience of time and how the brain perceives order, timing and duration of events. It is a cognitive process.
Scientific dispute
It is important to note that these senses are not widely accepted and the studies that claim humans have multiple additional senses are highly contested.
