Aqua Line: Mumbai’s first underground metro

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 5, Mumbai’s first underground metro, the Mumbai Metro 3 or Aqua Line, began its first journey on October 7.

For now, only the first phase of the Aqua Line is operational. The project is expected to become fully operational by June 2025.

Phase 1 of the Aqua Line runs from Aarey Colony to BKC across a 12.69 km long route. The line has 10 stations. 

The trains will run from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm from Monday to Saturday and from 8:30 am to 10:30 pm on Sundays. Tickets will cost between ₹10 and ₹50.

There will be 96 daily trips on the Aqua Line, with 9 trains having 8 cars each, accommodating over 2,000 passengers per trip.

With the Aqua Line, the time taken to travel from Cuffe Parade to the Mumbai International Airport will be reduced from 100 minutes to just 50 minutes.

The Aqua Line of the Mumbai Metro project was built at a revised cost of approximately ₹37,000 crore. The construction on the line is 98% complete.
