The Indian Railways is all set to test its first hydrogen-powered train in December 2024.
The train uses cells combining hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity with water vapour as the only emission.
The train is being manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and will have a maximum speed of 140km/hr.

The trial is scheduled to take place on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, covering nearly 90 kilometres.
The estimated cost of each hydrogen train is ₹80 crore and the ground infrastructure will require ₹70 crore per route on various heritage and hill routes.
Indian Railways aims to introduce 35 more hydrogen-powered trains by 2025, once the trial is successful.
