Hundreds of mango varieties are grown in India, but a few stand out. Here's a look at 7 popular mango varieties from across the country.
Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is known for its deep saffron pulp, smooth texture, and early summer arrival in Indian markets.
Dasheri mangoes from Malihabad have a thin peel, strong aroma, and sweet, juicy flesh. They are among the first to hit North Indian markets.
Langra mangoes from Varanasi stay green when ripe. Their fibrous texture and tangy-sweet taste make them a mid-season favourite.
Grown in Junagadh and Gir, Kesar mangoes are medium-sized with golden pulp and strong fragrance. They peak in flavour mid-June.
Also called Safeda, these mangoes are large, oblong and mildly sweet. Banganapalli is often the first mango to arrive in the summer.
Himsagar is a fibreless mango from Murshidabad with soft, saffron-yellow pulp. It is harvested only for a few weeks in May and June.
Totapuri has a beak-like tip and tangy taste. It is mainly used in pulps and pickles and dominates southern markets during early monsoon.
