Landslide victory
On July 5, 2024, Keir Starmer was appointed the Prime Minister of the UK by King Charles after the Labour Party swept the UK general election with 411 out of 650 seats.
Early life
Keir Starmer was born on September 2, 1962, in London. His father was a toolmaker and his mother was a nurse. He did his schooling from the selective state Reigate Grammar School.
Education
Starmer did his bachelor’s in law from the University of Leeds. He then received his postgraduate degree from Oxford. He was the first in his family to attain a university degree.
Legal career
Starmer began his career as a human rights lawyer in 1987. He was appointed the Queen's Counsel in 2002. From 2008-2013, he was Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service.
Political Career
He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015 as a Labour Party candidate for the London constituency. He became the party leader in January 2020.
Knighthood
In 2014, Sir Keir Starmer was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath for his service to law and criminal justice.
Personal life
In 2007, he married his wife Victoria, who is a trained legal professional and currently works in occupational health for the NHS. They have two children.
