In India, Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) are divided into three categories, representing the authority and autonomy they are granted by the central government.
The highest status is Maharatna (great jewel), followed by Navratna and Miniratna.
Maharatna companies are highly valuable and influential CPSEs with a global presence and maximum operational freedom.
Currently, there are 13 Maharatna companies in the country. Let’s take a look at them.

OIL is India’s second-largest oil and gas company engaged in the exploration, production and transportation of oil and natural gas.

REC finances power projects for state governments and the private sector. It funds rural electrification schemes and other power generation projects.

PFC provides financial assistance to the Indian power sector and also offers consulting and advisory services to power sector companies.

HPCL is engaged in refining crude oil and marketing various petroleum products like Asphalt, Diesel, Kerosene and LPG, among others.

BPCL produces oil and natural gas, refining crude oil and other petroleum products. It owns the LPG company Bharat Gas.

BHEL is a major power equipment manufacturer globally. It has an important role in India’s self-reliance initiatives.

GAIL is in the business of marketing, transmission and distribution of natural gas. It also engages in renewable energy projects.

CIL is a central coal mining company engaged in the production of coal and coal-based products used in several industries.

SAIL is a global steel supplier offering various iron and steel products to many businesses. It is India’s largest steel producer.
