A sovereign wealth fund is a state-owned investment fund that invests in real and financial assets abroad.

As per a report, India is planning to set up its own sovereign wealth fund (SWF). Here is a list of the biggest SWFs by asset size as of 2024.

Government Pension Fund Global
Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global is the largest SWF in the world. The fund was launched in 1990 and has a total asset value of $1,631 billion.

China Investment Corporation
With a total asset value of $1,350 billion, China Investment Corporation is the second-largest SWF in the world and the largest in Asia. 

SAFE Investment Company
The Hong Kong branch of the Chinese SWF, SAFE Investment Company, is the third-largest in the world. The SWF was launched in 1997 and has a total asset value of $1,090 billion.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA)
Managing total assets worth $993 billion as of 2024, the ADIA is the fourth-largest SWF in the world and the largest in the Middle East. It was launched in 1976.

Public Investment Fund
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund manages total assets worth $925 billion, making it the fifth-largest SWF in the world. It was launched in 1971.
