How is gold used in AI, space and smartphones?

For centuries, gold has been used as jewellery because of its beautiful yellow glow and excellent store of wealth. However, you’ll be surprised to know that gold is used in many technologies, including AI and medicine. Let’s look at some of them.

Today, gold is used in several modern technologies including artificial intelligence (AI). Gold’s conductivity, corrosion resistance, and ability to form reliable, thin wires make it a suitable fit for AI-enabled devices.

Artificial intelligence

Gold is an excellent conductor of electricity and is highly resistant to corrosion. It is used for high-quality electronic components in smartphones, computers and other electronic devices.

Electronics

Gold is used in aerospace technology for its reliability and durability in extreme conditions. It is applied in satellite coatings, reflective shields and connectors, among others.

Space technology

Gold is biocompatible, which means that it doesn’t cause adverse reactions in the human body. It is used in medical devices like pacemakers, stents and diagnostic equipment.

Medical devices

Due to their unique characteristics, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are being explored for various biomedical applications including drug delivery and cancer treatment.

Biomedicine

Gold demand driven by technology in the first quarter of 2024 rose by 10% year-over-year (YoY), reaching a total of 78.6 tonnes.
