The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Election 2026 is scheduled for January 15, 2026, after nearly three years of delay. Let’s learn key facts about BMC.

BMC, also known as the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), was established under the provisions of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888.

The BMC is one of the largest municipal bodies globally by population and budget, responsible for Mumbai’s urban planning, water, roads and other essential services.

The key revenue sources of the BMC are property taxes, development charges, licenses and permits, etc, with a budget of over ₹74,000 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26.

In February 2025, the BMC presented its budget for FY26, which was its largest-ever budget at ₹74,427 crore. Around 58% of the budget (₹43,166 crore) comprised capital expenditure.

BMC’s revenue for FY 2024-25 was revised from ₹35,749.03 crore to ₹40,693.85 crore in the last budget. For FY26, it estimates a revenue income of nearly ₹43,159.40 crore.
